Our Origins

Harlem Swings began with a simple goal: to bring Lindy Hop back to the young people of Harlem. Early outreach focused on visiting local schools, offering presentations and introductory classes to large groups of students. These efforts quickly grew, reaching hundreds of young people and sparking interest in a dance form rooted in their own community’s history.

From these beginnings, a lasting partnership with A. Philip Randolph High School became a cornerstone of the organization. What started as workshops grew into ongoing programming, creating a space for students to learn, perform and connect with a dance born in their own neighborhood. From the outset, Harlem Swings has been guided by a commitment to access and representation.

Our Mission

Harlem Swings continues to build on this foundation by combining education with broader cultural stewardship. Through school programs and community initiatives, we connect young people to Harlem’s Lindy Hop legacy while fostering confidence, creativity, and community engagement.

Beyond the classroom, our organization supports the preservation and celebration of this art form through cultural initiatives, archival efforts and partnerships that elevate Lindy Hop on both local and international stages. By linking youth education with cultural events and historical preservation, we ensure that Harlem’s influence is not only remembered but actively shared and lived!
